Fukuoka Prefecture

The shine is located at the Dazaifu city in Fukuoka pref. is a Tenmangu shrine dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the ninth century scholar and politician. This steep V-shaped gorge was formed as the Aso lava flow cooled rapidly after flowing into a belt-shaped deposit along the Gokase River. The area has been designated a National Scenic Natural Monument.
